Many think 2012 will bring drastic changes to planet earth and its inhabitants. Threats from space are real and any one who does not think so is being naive. Giant asteroids roam our universe and many are not charted. They are very hard to find with our current technology. Many will remember when the comet Shoemaker slammed Jupiter and left holes the size of earth on its surface. Solar flares could also disrupt or wipe out many electrical grids if powerful enough. A magnetic change to the earths poles would see unknown effects to our planet. NASA has predicted the peak cycle for possible giant solar flares is in the year 2012. Massive sun bursts have happened in the past. The sun is a giant gas ball that man kind will never be able to accurately predict when super sized explosions happen on its surface. The radiation from these massive bursts could penetrate our atmosphere.  Ancient historians such as Nostradamus or the Mayans have predicted global catastrophes. Whether they were right remains to be seen. The Bible and other religious cultures also fore-tell changes that we can not comprehend. Do we ignore them or embrace the theories and try to prevent the threats to our planet? The threat of nuclear war is very real. With enough explosive power to totally destroy our planet, it is crucial to safe guard countries that threaten us all. One rogue government or state could unleash a chain of events that could take thousands of years for the earth and its occupants to recover from. Present day nuclear bombs are much more powerful than in the past and the fallout would circle the world for a long time and decimate our environment.With recent disasters such as the giant oil spill in the gulf of Mexico we could see an increase in the use of nuclear power plants as our demand for energy increases..  Planet X is considered a myth but a planet or comet passing close by our earth could cause unknown changes on our gravitational alliance with the sun and moon. Global warming is a fact and the effects of our ice caps melting is the topic of much controversial debate. The polar ice reflects much of the suns rays and the oceans could rise and flood many coastal cities. Whether man made or a natural phenomena, it is happening in our life time and satellite pictures prove much of the ice is disappearing. A few degrees change in ocean temperature will alter our climate. The easy spread of incurable diseases could also wipe-out large portions of our population and must be taken seriously as a threat to our existence. Our earth is a beautiful oasis of life in the galaxy but there is many known and unknown threats to our planet. The exploration of space and the expansion of our knowledge will prevent the extinction of our species. Hopefully humanity will see the uncertainly of our existence on our planet and work together to overcome the many challenges we face as the guardians of our home. |
